Michael Magevney and Laura Mann Program of the Year Award

This award is based on the following criteria:

·   Is a current Break Away Chapter School.

·   Use of creative methods to plan, fundraise, recruit, and publicize the alternative break program.

·   Breadth and depth of social issues.

·   Development of Active Citizens.

·   Understanding and implementation of the 8 Components of a Quality Alternative Break.

·   Recommendation letter from a Host Site.

·   Quality of leadership and training.

Helen Ingersoll Staff Person of the Year Award

This award is based on the following criteria:

·   Program is a current Break Away Chapter School.

·   Staff person promotes student leadership by supporting a student - led alternative break model.

·   Supports implementation of the 8 Components of a Quality Alternative Break.

·   Is invested in building Active Citizenship on campus.

·   Advocates for the alternative break program to school administration and staff.

·   Contributes to the growth of the overall alternative break movement.

Misty Romero Active Citizen of the Year Award

This award is based on the following criteria:

·   Exemplifies the definition of Active Citizen (a person who makes community a priority in values and life choices) in their campus alternative break program and in the larger community.

David Dukes Host Site of the Year Award

This award is based on the following criteria:

·   Must have hosted at least one (1) Break Away Chapter School alternative break group(s) in 2010.

·   Engages alternative break groups in community interaction.

·   Helps to implement the Learning Components before and during the alternative break.

·   Plans and executes meaningful Direct Service.

·   Is invested in Active Citizenship and Reorientation programs.

·   Participates in or contributes to Reflection with the alternative break group.

Note: Current Break Away Staff, Programs Board, or Board of Directors Members will not be eligible to nominate a candidate for any of the five awards:
