David Dukes Host Site of the Year Award
This award is given to outstanding organization that display some or all of the following qualities when working with alternative breaks:
· Organization hosts a Break Away chapter school alternative break group.
· Organization engages the alternative break group in community interaction.
· Organization helps to implement the learning components before and during the alternative break.
· Organization plans and executes meaningful direct service.
· Organization is invested in active citizenship and reorientation programs.
· Organization participates in or contributes to reflection with the alternative break group.

Michael Magevney and Laura Mann Program of the Year Award
This award is given to an exemplary Break Away chapter school based on some or all of the following criteria:
· Program is a current Break Away chapter school.
· Program uses creative methods to plan, fundraise, recruit, and publicize the alternative break program (program will send sample documents and pictures to demonstrate).
· Breadth and depth of social issues.
· Development of participants as active citizens.
· Understanding and implementation of the 8 quality components of an alternative break.
· Recommendation letter from a host site.
· Quality of leadership and site leader training.

Misty Romero Active Citizen of the Year Award
This award is given to an individual based on some or all of the following criteria:
· This award is given to a person whose community is a priority in his/her values and life choices.
· The nominator will detail why the candidate should be considered for the Active Citizen Award.

Helen Ingersoll Staff Person of the Year Award
This award is given to an outstanding college or university staff person involved with the alternative break program at his/her campus based on the following criteria:
· Program is a current Break Away chapter school
· Staff person promotes student leadership by supporting a student led alternative break program
· Supports implementation of the 8 Components of a Quality alternative break
· Is invested in building active citizenship on campus and supports reorientation efforts
· Advocates for the alternative break program to the school administration and staff
II. Nomination Criteria
Note: Current Break Away Staff, Programs Board, or Board of Directors Members will not be eligible to nominate a candidate for any of the four awards:
David Dukes Host Site of the Year Award:
Any participant of an alternative break is eligible to nominate a candidate for this award.
Michael Magevney and Laura Mann Program of the Year Award:
Any student or staff member of the nominee’s school or any host site is eligible to nominate a candidate for this award.
Misty Romero Active Citizen of the Year Award:
Any student, staff member or alumni of a chapter school is eligible to nominate a candidate for this award. Any host site is eligible to nominate a candidate for this award.
Helen Ingersoll Staff Person of the Year Award:
Any student, staff member or alumni of a chapter school is eligible to nominate a candidate for this award.
III. Prizes
David Dukes Host Site of the Year Award:
Winners will receive national recognition for their host site, a personalized trophy, permanent notation on the annual Host Site of the Year Plaque housed in the national Break Away office, a letter of recognition, and a life time Break Away Non-Profit Membership.
Michael Magevney and Laura Mann Program of the Year Award:
Winners will receive national recognition for their program, a personalized trophy, permanent notation on the annual Program of the Year Plaque housed in the national Break Away office, a letter of recognition to their school administration, and a $100 credit for Break Away products and services.
Misty Romero Active Citizen of the Year Award:
Winners will receive national recognition, a personalized trophy, permanent notation on the annual Active Citizen of the Year Plaque housed in the national Break Away office, a letter of recognition, and a life time individual Break Away membership.
Helen Ingersoll Staff Person of the Year Award:
Winners will receive national recognition, a personalized trophy, permanent notation on the annual Staff Person of the Year Plaque housed in the national Break Away office, a letter of recognition, a $100 credit for Break Away products and services to be used by recipients alternative break program, and a life time individual Break Away membership.
IV. Timeline
Nomination forms distributed: Thursday, April 3, 2008
Nominations for all four awards are due by close of business (5 pm EST): Thursday, May 1, 2008
Award Winners Announced: Thursday, May 22, 2008
