Alternative Spring Break Program
History
In support of Widener University’s values of civic engagement, experiential learning, and leadership, the Alternative Spring Break Program has been developed over the past 18 years to offer a year-long, extracurricular, educational activity that culminates in a service-oriented immersion experience during the week of Spring Break. Through direct service work, student participants are able to learn about and address important social issues including poverty, homelessness, substandard housing, and the delicate balance between volunteer and community relations throughout the United States of America. The overall goal of the program is to make a difference in the communities served by the direct service of the program’s participants.
