Workshop Descriptions

Break Away Workshop Objectives


All workshops combine hands-on activities with interactive discussions. Supplementary handouts are also included in participant materials to assist with retention and application. Additionally, the following list does not include educational sessions, speaker panels, reflection sessions, and other activities incorporated as part of our experiential model. Facilitation

  • Name the three goals of facilitation.
  • Define facilitation and list responsibilities of a facilitator.
  • Give examples of safe space and comfort zones.
  • Demonstrate techniques of an effective facilitator and distinguish a facilitator from a traditional leader.
  • Present goals for teaching program leaders techniques in active listening and drawing out 100% participation.


Group Works

  • Name the five stages of group process as well as the major issues and group behaviors that characterize each stage.
  • Give examples that illustrate the appropriate leader role for each of the stages of group process.
  • List, define and give examples of and reasons for using the tools for working in teams.
  • Demonstrate the 5 Steps conflict resolution process within various alternative break scenarios.
  • Present goals for teaching program leaders techniques of group building, understanding the group process, and conflict resolution.


Diversity

  • Give examples of visible and invisible types of diversity on campus.
  • Present goals for recruiting diverse populations for alternative break trips and leadership.
  • List and explain campus and community resources for showing others why and how to incorporate diversity into campus alternative break programs.
  • Use activities to train other leaders how to begin sharing their perspectives on diversity.


Reflection

  • Define reflection and explain the importance of reflection within the alternative break experience.
  • Define and give examples of the Principles of Reflection (4-Cs).
  • Illustrate and explain the Triangle of Quality Community Service.
  • Plan and implement reflection sessions using the What, So What, Now What model.


Reorientation

  • Define reorientation and utilize the Active Citizen Continuum to explain the importance of reorientation within the alternative break experience.
  • List various ways to incorporate reorientation within the campus alternative break program.
  • Explain how effective reorientation relates to fundraising, recruitment, the learning components, diversity and Break Awayâ programs nationwide.
  • Present objectives for collaborating with individuals, organizations and businesses on campus and in the local community to implement effective reorientation that benefits multiple stakeholders.


Site Selection and Development

  • Explain the five critical elements of a quality community service, as determined by C.O.O.L, along with the Break Awayâ key components of quality alternative break host sites.
  • Explain the importance of having alternative break sites focused around social issues of importance to the campus community, rather than around specific locations.
  • Describe elements necessary in developing and maintaining good relationships with host sites.
  • Present goals for addressing the issue of respecting differences with site leaders and participants who will be guests in host communities.
  • List roles and responsibilities of alternative break programs and their host sites in creating a quality alternative break experience.
  • Explain how site development relates to education, orientation, training, and reorientation.

Recruitment and Selections

  • Create a diverse list of community members and organizations that need to be involved in the campus alternative break program.
  • Present objectives for recruiting new diverse populations to participate in the alternative break program.
  • List pros and cons of various selection processes.
  • Illustrate the reasoning behind current selection processes.
  • Present goals for incorporating new ideas to improve current selection processes.


Alcohol and Alternative Breaks

  • Clearly articulate several reasons why Alcohol and Drug Free is one of the Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break, including safety, group building, legal, and community concerns.
  • Present goals for creating a written alcohol policy that specifically details all the expectations (what is/is not a violation of the policy, who is responsible for reporting violations of the policy, who is responsible for determining and enforcing the consequences of the policy, what type of waiver is necessary to support the implementation of the alcohol policy).
  • List critical elements missing from current alcohol policy and present objectives for incorporating these elements into the campus alternative break program alcohol policy.
  • Present goals for teaching other program leaders how to create ownership of the alcohol and drug free policy.


Finances and Fundraising

  • List expenses and sources of income that will become a part of the campus alternative break program budget.
  • Present goals for creating and utilizing a program budget to increase the efficiency, accountability and overall effectiveness of the campus alternative break program.
  • Share various options for funding a campus alternative break program.
  • List potential local and national partners who may be interested in funding the campus alternative break program.
  • Present goals for teaching other program leaders and participants how to effectively ask for financial support.


Learning Components (Education, Orientation, Training)

  • Define the concepts of Education, Orientation and Training and list examples of information and activities to support the implementation of the learning components.
  • Present objectives for collaborating with site contacts, Break Awayâ and its Chapter Schools, and other campus and community resources to improve the quality and depth of the learning components.
  • Explain the benefits of effective Education, Orientation, and Training for participants and the community.
  • Present an action plan for improving the implementation of the learning components within the campus alternative break program.


Break Away Basics

  • Define the Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break.
  • Present goals for teaching campus program leaders and alternative break participants about the importance of the Eight Quality Components.
  • Illustrate the Active Citizen Continuum and explain how the Eight Quality Components contribute to the development of lifelong active citizens.
  • Understand how to utilize appropriate Break Awayâ resources, including the Chapter Program, the SiteBank, various manuals, and training sessions to improve the quality of campus alternative break programs.


Site Leaders and Site Leader Training

  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of co-Site Leaders as critical factors of quality alternative break programs.
  • Explain pros and cons of different methods for selecting and training Site Leaders, including the time of year when they are selected.
  • Explain methods for offering Site Leaders a support system throughout alternative break program planning and implementation.
  • Develop goals and a timeline for training Site Leaders.


Strategic Planning

  • Name and define the tools of strategic planning, including the vision, mission, goals, objectives, action steps, and timeline of the program.
  • Use SWOT analysis to evaluate the current status of the campus alternative break program.
  • Begin a strategic plan for the campus alternative break program.
  • Utilize the Break Awayâ sticky method of creating a strategic planning timeline.
  • Explain to other leaders the importance of strategic planning, including how the elements of a strategic plan relate to one another as well as other areas of alternative break program development.
