- IUPUI's Alternative Break Program
- Alternative breaks at IUPUI were begun by a handful of students who were concerned IUPUI did not provide meaningful experiences in which to discuss important social issues. These student leaders recognized that others peers were experiencing the effects of social issues within the larger Indianapolis area, and wanted to implement alternative break experiences at IUPUI to give students a forum to discuss their multiple identities while working to address power, privilege, and oppression on campus. These innovative student leaders created IUPUI's first alternative break, and initiated what would become IUPUI's well-known Alternative Break Program.
IUPUI's alternative break organization has become a pivotal experience within the Division of Student Affairs. IUPUI administrative staff serve as advisors for incoming student leaders, while serving as liaisons between students and higher university officials in financial and logistical matters. The program offers scholarships to student leaders to offset the costs of university attendance, and is expected to grow with further partnerships among other academic units on IUPUI's campus. IUPUI has now sponsored over 100 trips in fifteen years, while continuing to empower domestic and international student leaders to find meaningful service opportunities, draft critical educational curricula, and facilitate learning experiences for peers.
