Alternative Break Citizenship schools

The definitive leadership experience for campuses focused on justice-driven alternative break programs.

For the past 30 years, Break Away has been hosting our summer conference series the Alternative Break Citizenship schools (ABCs). The ABCs are experiential training sessions that provide student + staff leaders with the knowledge, skills, and connections they need to start or strengthen a justice-driven, community-centered alternative break program.

The ABCs combine workshops and intensive planning sessions to help you develop an action plan for the 2021-2022 academic year and beyond. You can look forward to interactive workshops on social justice education and service-learning best practices, with processing time in a small group setting. The result is a dynamic conference combining learning in workshops with opportunities to foster connections with student + staff leaders from campuses nationwide.

The Future of Alternative Breaks

May 24 - 27 (Staff Track)
June 10 - 13
July 12 - 15
July 29 - August 1

With travel restrictions, budget cuts, and programming going virtual, COVID-19 has forced us to rethink how we do alternative breaks. As we rebuild, we have a unique opportunity to re-envision the fundamentals, better align our practices with our values, and shape the future of alternative breaks. This year’s virtual ABCs will provide an opportunity to get introspective exploring the “why” of alternative breaks, how oppressive systems play out in our programs, and the role of service learning in social justice movements. We’ll be placing a special emphasis on incorporating alternatives to direct service, like mutual aid and advocacy, and developing asset-based practices.
