Schools + Universities

Break Away Chapter schools are a committed and collaborative network of community engagement programs across the country.

While Break Away doesn’t plan engagement experiences or make programmatic decisions for our Chapters, we support members' planning through our Site Bank, a searchable database of over 100 community organizations; Housing Bank, similar to the Site Bank but with potential housing partners; and online planning materials.

We gather and consistently share promising practices with program leaders at member institutions through webinars and discussion guides, our semesterly newsletter, and our annual National Alternative Break Survey.

Community Organizations

You may not know it, but there are groups of college students that are enthusiastic (okay, understatement) to find out about the work your organization is doing in the community. To get ready to work with you, they'll begin meeting months in advance to learn about the social issues you focus on, the historical and cultural context of your community, and your vision and mission. They'll come prepared with skills you've asked them to develop and be positions to contribute time and energy to projects for your organization.

Housing Organizations

There are hundreds of college students and staff members that plan community engagement experiences each year. As they coordinate these experiences, many seek and rely on housing partners in their host communities to provide their groups safe and affordable housing. This allows for experiences to be financially accessible to students who wish to participate in these engagement opportunities. As a housing partner, you will be connecting students to the communities where they will learn and engage, as well as often providing spaces for them to rest, dine together, and reflect as a group.
